The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened an investigation with the intent to file fresh charge sheet on the involvement of finance ministry officials in the disbursal of loans from state-owned banks to Kingfisher Airlines, The Economic Times reported.

The investigating agency has formally obtained relevant documents pertaining to the involvement of the ministry officials to build its case, which are currently being scrutinised for further interrogations, the report said citing people familiar with the details of the proceedings.

The main focus of the investigation is on the then banking joint secretary Amitabh Verma regarding a disbursement of Rs 500 crore from State Bank of India, according to the report.

The email exchanges and correspondence recovered from Kingfisher owner and liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s residence are the key to the probe, people familiar with the investigation told ET.
