10:39 AM EST, 01/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors ( GM ) is facing a preliminary investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, after reports alleging failure of its L87 V8 engine, according to a Thursday statement from the regulator.
The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation said it has received 39 complaints and a series of early warning reporting field reports on the alleged engine failure. According to the statement, the probe will include about 877,710 Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC vehicle models from 2019 to 2024.
The transportation regulator said a bearing failure was reported by complainants, which could bring about an engine seizure or a breach of the engine block that could increase the risk of a crash and lead to injuries as well as property damage.
General Motors ( GM ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for a comment.
