05:18 AM EDT, 07/28/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ ) has agreed to commit up to $5.5 billion to settle about 76,000 lawsuits that alleged its talc products caused ovarian cancer, aiming to bring finality to the 15-year litigation.
The first payment is capped at $3 billion in 2027, with no further payments due before 2028 as part of the proposed resolution, the company said Monday.
The deal is conditioned on approval from law firms representing at least 95% of the remaining claimants in state and federal courts.
The proposed resolution follows a "favorable ruling by the MDL [Multi-District Litigation] court, and acknowledgment by plaintiffs' counsel, regarding plaintiffs' inability to prove that the company's talc products caused any particular claimant's ovarian cancer," Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ ) said.
The company said its proposed resolution "complements the progress it has made to resolve the talc litigation, including previously settling about 95% of filed mesothelioma lawsuits, all State consumer protection claims, and all talc-supplier disputes."
Johnson & Johnson's ( JNJ ) shares were up over 2% in premarket activity on Tuesday.
