Market Chatter: Tesla Requested Reduced Tariff From Canada on Chinese EVs Approach, Reuters Reports
Aug 29, 2024 2:17 AM

04:46 AM EDT, 08/29/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) had requested a lower tariff on its vehicles from Ottawa before the Canadian government imposed a new tariff policy earlier this week for all Chinese-made electric vehicles, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing an unnamed Canadian government source.

Canada has imposed duties for all Chinese-made EVs, effective Oct. 1, applicable to all EVs shipped from China, including those made by Tesla, the report said.

Before the announcement, Tesla sought a tariff rate similar to what it received in the European Union, the source told Reuters.

The EU recently imposed a 9% tariff on cars Tesla made in China, compared with a 36.3% tariff on other Chinese EVs, according to the report.

Tesla did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
