01:58 PM EDT, 07/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Toyota Motor's ( TM ) Toyota Research Institute and Stanford Engineering said Tuesday that their research demonstrated that two cars can drift in tandem using artificial intelligence.
They said that with the autonomous tandem drifting sequence, they were able to simulate "dynamic conditions where cars must respond quickly to other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists."
Toyota Research Institute developed control mechanisms for the lead car to enable it to make repeatable and safe lead runs, while Stanford Engineering developed AI vehicle models and algorithms that allowed the chase car to adapt to the lead car's motion so that it can drift alongside without crashing, they said.
