Voting in the first phase of Chhattisgarh Assembly polls for 18 constituencies spread across eight Maoist-affected districts have ended. While polling in 10 constituencies -- Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, Konta, Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal and Kondagaon ended at 3 pm, voting at Khairagarh, Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Bastar, Jagdalpur and Chitrakot concluded at 5 pm.

Amid sporadic violence by Maoists, nearly 65 percent of the electorate voted in the first phase of Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh that marks the start of five-state elections widely seen as a 'semi-final' ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha battle, reported IANS. According to the report, Election Commission stated that over 20 lakh of the 31 lakh electorate had voted across eight insurgency-hit districts. Polling in 10 constituencies in the Maoist hub in Bastar ended at 3 p.m. and in the rest at 5 pm.

Defying Maoist threats, nearly half of the electorate exercised their franchise on Monday by 3 pm in 18 constituencies in the first phase of Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh where the Congress is vying to end 15 years of BJP rule. The turnout comes even after the Maoist call for poll boycott that was followed by attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel. While the Congress has alleged rampant EVM rigging in Bastar area, the poll panel rejected the charges.

The development comes has the security forces have taken strict measures to combat any disruption to polling in the state. PM Narendra Modi hit out against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi while addressing the rally at Bilaspur. Polling is underway in a makeshift polling booths in Sukma. The shift in venue happened following the discovery by the CRPF discovered that the original polling booth in the area had been mined by Maoists. Thousands of security personnel have been deployed in the state after the Maoists called for the boycotting of the polls in the state.
