The Supreme Court on Friday was informed that the government was withdrawing the request for proposal for setting up social media hubs.

In June, the government had extended the last date for submission of proposals to August 20.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry came up with a plan of setting up a social media hub for monitoring online data.
Recently, the Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the ministry, had floated a tender to supply a software for the project.
Under the project, media persons would be employed on contractual basis in each district to be the "eyes and ears" of the government and provide real-time updates from the ground.
The tender document says the platform is expected to provide automated reports, tactical insights and comprehensive work-flows to initiate engagement across digital channels.
A PIL in Supreme Court had argued that the government wants to tap citizens' WhatsApp messages. The PIL had said that the move was a gross violation of privacy and that it was violating right to life under the constitution.
