The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised the alert for Mumbai to ‘red’ from ‘orange’ for the next 24 hours. While 'orange' alert is issued as a warning of extremely bad weather which could potentially disrupt commute, 'red' refers to taking action with the certainty of disruptions.

As a precautionary measure, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered all schools in the city to remain shut for the day, said the BMC Disaster Control.

"The principals of schools where students have already reached, have been directed to ensure their safe return home," an official told IANS.

Many low-lying areas in the city and suburbs were flooded.

Flight operations at Mumbai Airport were delayed due to the downpour and fluctuating visibility levels.

According to a report by The Hindu, in 24 hours — from Monday morning to Tuesday morning — the city recorded 131.4mm rainfall. The average rainfall received by the city in September is 312.3mm.
