Penguin Random House looks to tap into regional markets with Hind Pocket Books acquisition

Penguin Random House India, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House, on Thursday said it has acquired Hind Pocket Books, to build on its presence in local language publishing.

Penguin said Vaishali Mathur, who previously was responsible for Indian language publishing and rights at Penguin, would take over as the editor-in-chief of Hind Pocket Books.

Penguin’s senior vice president, Nandhan Jha will take on the added portfolio of building the Indian language publishing unit, in addition to heading the sales and product for the publication house, the publisher said in a statement.

“This is a landmark acquisition for Penguin Random House India, and reiterates our commitment and passion to grow publishing and readership in the region,” said Gaurav Shrinagesh, chief executive officer, Penguin Random House India.

Hind Pocket Books, one of the oldest Hindi language publishers has published books which have won several awards, including the Nobel Prize, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award, and has published the works of several well-known authors including Khushwant Singh, R K Narayan, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Osho and Wayne Dyer.

Penguin began Hindi publications in India in 2005, and has built a significant catalogue of acclaimed titles over the years.

The government has increased wage for the workers under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) effective from April 1, 2020. The rural development ministry as every year since 2005 has revised the wage for workers under MNREGS, but starting April 1, 2020, hike for the workers will be highest in the 5 years, as the average national wage is increased by Rs 20.
