The strike, called to protest the new farm and labour laws and also to raise various demands is backed by trade unions like Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Co-ordination Centre (TUCC) and Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA). However, BJP affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is not participating in the strike.

The Delhi Police strengthened its presence in border areas of the national capital in view of the 'Delhi chalo' protest march by farmers against the Centre's new farm laws. The farmers are scheduled to reach Delhi on Thursday through five highways connecting the city as part of their march call.
Farmers have expressed apprehension that the new laws would pave way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big corporates. They have been demanding that the laws be repealed.
Banking operations in public sector banks were partially affected as some bank unions joined the one-day nationwide strike. However, despite these operational issues, State Bank of India and private sector banks are functional.
Instances of disturbances by supporters of the strike were reported in West Bengal where officials said activists brought out rallies disrupting vehicular movement and asking shopkeepers to pull down the shutters of their establishments, an official said.
The normal life in Kerala was hit as all major sectors including government offices, banking and insurance were brought to a standstill.
Normal life was affected partially in several parts of Odisha and Tripura due to the countrywide strike.
