US March Advance Trade Gap Widens Unexpectedly, Inventories Mixed

08:40 AM EDT, 04/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The US advance international trade in goods deficit widened to $161.99 billion in March from $147.85 billion in February, according to data released by the US Census Bureau, compared with a smaller $145.0 billion deficit expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:35 am ET.

Exports rose by 1.2% in March while imports rose by 5% ahead of the Trump Administration's tariff announcement on April 2.

In the same report, wholesale inventories increased by 0.5% in March, the same as in February and below a 0.6% gain expected.

Retail inventories were down 0.1% in March, also the same as in the previous month and compared with the 0.3% increase expected by analysts. Excluding a 1.1% decrease in motor vehicle inventories, retail inventories increased by 0.4% in the month.
