The BSE Sensex closed higher by 266.80 points, or 0.75 percent, to 35,645.40, while the NSE Nifty 50 ended 70.00 points up, or 0.65 percent, to 10,769.90. Financials were top contributors to Nifty gains with HDFC twins being top gainers. Besides financials, auto stocks continued the upmove trend after reporting strong sales in the month of June. The 4-wheeler major Maruti closed at 1-month high and Bajaj auto surged 4%. Also, shares of auto parts and equipment makers, Bharat Forge and MM Forgings gained.

Asian stocks closed in negative territory, with China markets failing to sustain gains notched in the last session as trade jitters continued to simmer ahead of a deadline when tariffs are due to take effect. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 declined 0.3% to close at 21,717, notching a third consecutive session of declines. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1%, extending the previous session's losses, with the heaviest declines seen in the energy and real estate sectors. On the mainland, the Shanghai composite tracked lower once again, falling 0.9% 4 percent to close at 2,760.59 after recording late gains in the previous trading session.

Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd rises as much as 4.5 percent to Rs 108.5 - its biggest intraday percent gain in nearly 4 weeks. Credit Suisse (CS) upgraded Gujarat Pipavav Port to “outperform” from “neutral”, citing 40 percent correction in its share price from Q2 FY17-end levels, buoyant container sector growth, recent line addition and attractive valuations.

The stock has strong operating leverage as incremental EBITDA contribution of volumes is high and there can be a margin upside as well with recovery in volumes, according to CS, while adding that concession extension is likely in its view. Even otherwise, it doesn’t see a downside from current level of stock price. CS has cut target price to Rs 135 from Rs 145. The stock has been down about 24 percent this year as of last close. The BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 are currently trading in the green. The Sensex was trading higher by 72.06 points, or 0.20 percent, to 35,450.66, while the Nifty rose by 17.25 points, or 0.16 percent, to 10,717.15 at 1pm. As many as 24 stocks advanced on the NSE against 25 declines, while 1 stock remain unchanged. Sectoral indices on the NSE were mixed, with Nifty Bank, Auto, Fin Service, Pharma, Pvt Bank in the positive zone, while FMCG, IT, Media, Metal, PSU Bank, Realty were in the red. Nifty Pharma gained the most with 1 percent rise, while the PSU Bank declined the most at 0.84 percent.
