Equity Markets Close Mixed as Investors Await Key Earnings
Jun 24, 2024 2:15 PM

04:52 PM EDT, 06/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US benchmark equity indexes closed mixed Monday as traders awaited several key corporate earnings scheduled to be released later in the week.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.1% to 17,496.8, while the S&P 500 lost 0.3% to 5,447.9. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7% to 39,411.2. Technology saw the steepest decline among sectors, while energy led the gainers.

Micron Technology ( MU ) , Nike ( NKE ) , FedEx ( FDX ) , Carnival (CCL, CUK), Walgreens Boots Alliance ( WBA ) and Levi Strauss (LEVI) are among the major names scheduled to report their latest quarterly financial results later this week.

Nvidia ( NVDA ) shares fell 6.7% Monday, the steepest decline on the Nasdaq and among the worst on the S&P 500.

Coca-Cola (KO) shares rose 1.9%, among the top gainers on the Dow, as BNP Paribas Exane initiated the stock at outperform with a $72 price target.

Apple's ( AAPL ) steering rules in its App Store marketplace are in breach of the European Commission's new digital competition law, the regulator said while also opening a second probe into contract terms for developers. The iPhone maker's shares closed 0.3% higher.

The US 10-year yield fell 2.5 basis points to 4.23%, while the two-year rate lost one basis point to 4.72%.

San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said the Federal Reserve's monetary policy-setting committee must remain open to adjusting interest rates as needed. The bumpiness of recent inflation and uncertainty going forward has not provided the Federal Open Market Committee enough confidence to lower rates yet, Daly said.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 1.2% to $81.67 per barrel.

In economic news, Texas' manufacturing contraction improved slightly less than expected in June, while the six-month outlook rose "notably," according to the Dallas Fed.

Gold rose 0.6% to $2,346 per troy ounce, while silver fell 0.1% to $29.59 per ounce.
