08:10 AM EST, 01/28/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.2% in Tuesday's premarket activity, as markets recovered after a significant decline in tech stocks, driven by concerns over competition from China's AI company DeepSeek.
US stock futures were also edging higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.01%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.
The US Federal Reserve begins a two-day policy session later in the day, with an interest-rate decision expected by Wednesday at 2 pm ET.
December's durable goods orders bulletin will be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the Case-Shiller Home Price Index and the FHFA House Price Index, both for November, at 9 am ET.
The Conference Board's consumer confidence index for January and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index for January will be released at 10 am ET.
In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 1.3% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.6% higher.

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.3% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.
Hepion Pharmaceuticals ( HEPA ) stock was up 26% premarket, reversing the more than 13% loss at the previous close. According to a Monday filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company has asked shareholders to vote for a reverse stock split at its March 10 meeting to avoid delisting from the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.5%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.8% higher.
Synchrony Financial ( SYF ) shares were down 5% pre-bell Tuesday, continuing from the 1.1% fall at the prior close. The company reported higher year-over-year Q4 results but net revenue trailed FactSet analysts' expectations.

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was up 0.1%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) declined 0.5%, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) retreated marginally by 0.03%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) gained 0.4%.
Royal Caribbean Group (RCL) shares were up 4.8% pre-bell after the company reported higher Q4 adjusted net income and revenue alongside upbeat guidance for Q1 and 2025.

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was down 1.5%. The iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.
LanzaTech Global ( LNZA ) stock was down 3.4% before the opening bell, continuing its fall from the 9.5% fall at Monday's close. LanzaTech, Haffner Energy, and LanzaJet said Tuesday they are partnering to pursue the production of sustainable aviation fuel from biomass residues.

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.4%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.5% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.5%.
Clarivate ( CLVT ) said Tuesday that the British Library has selected the company to provide its library services and discovery platforms.
Energy
The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was flat, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.1%.
Coterra Energy ( CTRA ) stock was up 0.6% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company said it had finalized the purchase of certain Permian Basin assets from Franklin Mountain Energy and Avant Natural Resources for $3.9 billion.
Commodities
Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.7% to $74.26 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 3.1% to $3.58 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) gained 0.9%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 2.3% lower.
Gold futures for April increased 0.3% to $2,775.60 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures gained 0.3% to reach $30.51 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) were up 0.1%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.1% lower.
