Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Thursday as Court Blocks Trump Tariffs

08:10 AM EDT, 05/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 1.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 1.6% higher in Thursday's premarket activity after a US federal court blocked key components of President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.5%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 1.5% before the start of regular trading.

Economic reports releasing at 8:30 am ET include the revised Q1 GDP report, the weekly jobless claims bulletin, and the Q1 corporate profits report.

The April pending home sales index is slated for a 10 am ET release, followed by the weekly EIA natural gas report at 10:30 am ET.

The weekly EIA petroleum status report posts at 12 pm ET.

Federal Reserve Chicago President Austan Goolsbee, Governor Adriana Kugler, San Francisco President Mary Daly, Dallas President Lorie Logan and Richmond President Thomas Barkin are slated to speak on Thursday.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 1.8% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.8% higher.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.3%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) , the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) , and the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) were inactive.

Taysha Gene Therapies ( TSHA ) stock was up more than 15% premarket after the company said late Wednesday it priced a public offering of 46.9 million shares at $2.75 apiece and pre-funded warrants to purchase 25.9 million shares at $2.749 per warrant.

Winners and Losers:

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 1.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1.4% lower.

Futu ( FUTU ) shares were up more than 5% pre-bell Thursday after the company reported higher Q1 earnings and revenue.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) rose 2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 2.3% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 2.4%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) increased 3.7%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) advanced 2.4%.

Nvidia ( NVDA ) shares were up more than 5% in recent premarket activity after the company late Wednesday reported higher fiscal Q1 non-GAAP earnings and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was up 1.3%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) 0.6% higher.

EnCore Energy (EU) stock was up more than 3% before Thursday's opening bell after the company said it received regulatory approval to expand its existing radioactive materials license in Texas to include the Upper Spring Creek uranium project, enabling construction of new wellfields and a satellite processing plant to support its Rosita operations.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was flat. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 1.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was up 1.2%.

Li Auto ( LI ) shares were down more than 3% pre-bell after the company posted lower Q1 adjusted earnings.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.5%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) gained 1.3%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

U-Haul Holding ( UHAL ) stock was up more than 1% before the opening bell after the company reported higher fiscal Q4 revenue.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 0.5% to reach $62.16 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas retreated 0.03% to $3.56 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was 1% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) advanced 0.2%.

Gold futures for August were up marginally by 0.01% at $3,322.60 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures advanced 1.2% to $33.56 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) retreated 0.1%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.4% higher.
