Exchange-Traded Funds Higher, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

12:56 PM EDT, 08/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) gained 0.2%.

US equity indexes traded mixed in choppy midday trading Wednesday as volatility continued to rise and government bond yields extended declines ahead of the July monetary policy meeting minutes.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 0.5%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) added 0.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were rising.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was up 1.4%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 0.6% higher.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) lost 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) fell 1.2% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) rose 1.1%.

Commodities

Crude fell 1.3%; United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 1.3%. Natural gas dropped 2.3% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) retreated 2.1%.

Gold was down 0.3% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.3%. Silver was 0.1% lower and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) edged lower.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) gained 0.7%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was up 1%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 0.1%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) added 0.3%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was up 0.5%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were higher.
