Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

12:58 PM EDT, 07/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 2.7%.

US equity indexes were mixed after midday, with a sell-off in semiconductor names pushing the Nasdaq and S&P 500 lower.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) added 0.8% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 1.1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) dipped 3.7%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) lost 4.2% and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dropped 5.5%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 2% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) lost 1.9%.

Commodities

Crude was up 2.4%; United States Oil Fund (USO) added 1.8%. Natural gas fell 5.5% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) lost 5.8%.

Gold was down 0.2% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was 0.6% lower. Silver lost 3.3% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dipped 3.7%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 1.2%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 1.5%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.5%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher, and iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 1.4%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) gained 0.9%. iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
