US benchmark stock indexes rose in midday trading on Thursday as investors digested economic data ahead of Friday's August employment report.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) both added 0.8%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose less than 0.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were mixed, with the latter rising fractionally.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) rose 0.9%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was up 0.6%.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) climbed 2.2%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), dropped 2.4%.
Commodities
Crude oil fell 0.5%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) dropped 0.5%. Natural gas rose 1.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was up 0.8%.
Gold on Comex dipped 0.6%, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) lost 0.4%. Silver shed 1.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1% down.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) slipped 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were mixed, with the latter falling 0.3%.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) rose 1.2%, VanEck Retail ETF (RTH), and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) gained as well.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.2%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) moved higher. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) eased 0.7%.
Industrial
Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) was up 0.6%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) rose as well.
Cryptocurrency
In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) lost 2.1%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) was down 2.6%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) shed 4.1%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) dropped 2.2%.
