Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Rise Ahead of Fed's Monetary Policy Decision

01:03 PM EDT, 03/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were trading higher. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was up 0.1%.

US benchmark stock indexes traded little changed as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's economic projections later on Wednesday to gauge the mood among policymakers for interest rate cuts.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) fell 0.4% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) down 0.5%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was fractionally up; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) edged down 0.3% and iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) fell 0.2%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 1.2% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 1.1%.

Commodities

Crude was down 2.2%; United States Oil Fund (USO) declined 2%. Natural gas was down 3.2% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) decreased 1.6%.

Gold was fractionally higher based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fractionally up. Silver was down 0.2% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was fractionally higher.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was fractionally up; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) was flat and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was down 0.1%.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) gained 0.3%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 0.5% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.8%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) gained 0.5% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were higher.
