The motion will be the first no-trust motion for the ruling government and the first in over one-and-a-half decade since the BJP-led government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003.

A no-confidence motion can be moved by the opposition on several issues such as special status to Andhra Pradesh, mob attacks, violence against dalits and women, among others.

In a house of 535 members, the ruling National Democratic Alliance has 313 members in the Lok Sabha, including 274 (including the speaker) of BJP, 18 of Shiv Sena, six Lok Janshakti Party and four Shiromani Akali Dal. The government needs 267 votes to sail through the no confidence motion.

The stated strength of the opposition is 222, including 63 of the Congress-led UPA, 37 of AIADMK, 34 of Trinamool Congress, 20 Biju Janata Dal, 16 Telugu Desam Party and 11 Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
