Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Rise in Late Afternoon Trading

03:51 PM EST, 01/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were higher late Thursday afternoon, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) rising 0.4% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) climbing 0.6%.

In corporate news, Uber ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) are under investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission for allegedly illegally coordinating efforts to limit driver pay in New York City, Bloomberg reported. Uber ( UBER ) shares fell 0.6%, while Lyft ( LYFT ) was flat.

Comcast ( CMCSA ) reported a sharper Q4 loss in domestic broadband subscribers than it previously expected, and said there's likely no competitive relief in sight. The shares dropped 11%.

Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) forecast year-over-year growth in a key revenue metric for the ongoing quarter as its Q4 earnings rose more than expected amid strong travel demand. Its shares were still down 1.3%.

United Parcel Service ( UPS ) issued a downbeat full-year revenue outlook after posting Q4 topline below market estimates. UPS CFO Brian Dykes said in an earnings call that the company has reached an agreement in principle with Amazon.com (AMZN) "to significantly reduce" the amount it delivers for them. UPS shares fell 14%.
