Sector Update: Energy Stocks Softer Late Afternoon

03:39 PM EDT, 09/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks were decreasing late Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index shedding 0.3% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) down 0.2%.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index fell 0.9% and the Dow Jones US Utilities index declined 0.7%.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 2.5% to $65.58 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent crude advanced 1.4% to $69.09 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures added 0.2% to $3.00 per 1 million BTU.

In corporate news, PG&E ( PCG ) shares were down 0.2% after it said Tuesday it lowered electric rates for all of its residential customers by 2.1%.

Eni (E) shares may be due for a "breather" after a solid run with a valuation now comparable with peers, making the risk-reward "less compelling" amid uncertainty over Chief Executive Officer Claudio Descalzi's potential transition when his term ends in 2026, RBC Capital Markets said. RBC downgraded the stock to sector perform from outperform. Eni shares were shedding 0.9%.

Diamondback Energy ( FANG ) will sell Environmental Disposal Systems to Deep Blue Midland Basin for $750 million and renew a 15-year water dedication across a 12-county Midland Basin area, Deep Blue said. Diamondback shares added 0.6%.

Tamboran Resources ( TBN ) shares rose 5% after it said Tuesday its Beetaloo joint venture received approval from Australia's Northern Territory government to sell appraisal gas from the Shenandoah South pilot project in the Beetaloo Basin.
