Sensex, Nifty open flat ahead of no-confidence vote against Modi government

The Indian market on Friday opened on a flat note tracking tepid global sentiments and ahead of the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government.

Rupee hit a fresh record low of 69.12 after opening at 69.01 against the US dollar.

Traders on the Dalal Street are closely tracking developments on the corporate earnings with firms like Wipro, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Life, Havells India posting their first quarter report.

The BSE Sensex opened at 36777, marginally higher by 26 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 started above 10,950 mark, at 10,963.

The Sensex, however, jumped more than 121 points to 36,472.35.

Sectoral indices were trading mixed with negativity seen in PSU banks, while the midcap index was trading marginally lower.

Among shares, Reliance Industries is at an all-time high. Infosys and Hindalco are the other top index gainers, while Vedanta, Airtel, HPCL and BPCL are the top losers.

Asian markets traded lower with Japan's Nikkei down by 0.62 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was trading lower by half a percent.
