US Has Ended Iran's Ability to Close Strait of Hormuz, Energy Secretary Says
Jun 24, 2026 4:54 PM

07:40 PM EDT, 06/24/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday Iran no longer has the ability to close the Strait of Hormuz after the US began escorting commercial ships through the waterway, CNBC reported Wednesday.

Speaking at a conference in New York, Wright said US naval escorts through Oman's territorial waters have prevented Iran from disrupting commercial shipping.

According to CNBC, he said 72 ships carrying about 19 million barrels of oil transited the strait in the past 24 hours.

Wright also said the US could reimpose its naval blockade if Iran fails to meet Washington's demands, adding the Trump administration would ensure global energy supplies remain stable, CNBC reported.
