Over 780 candidates lose deposit

Over 780 candidates who were in the fray in the civic polls in Delhi lost their deposit with the results being announced on Wednesday, according to data shared by the State Election Commission. A total of 1,349 candidates tested their fortunes in the high-stakes polls held on December 4. In a statement on Wednesday, the SEC shared data related to the counting exercise, according to which 784 candidates lost their security deposit.

Wards in Jain, Sisodia's Assembly constituencies swept by BJP

The BJP swept three of the four wards in the Patparganj Assembly segment and all three in the Shakur Basti constituency held by senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain -- both targets of sustained attacks over corruption by the saffron party -- in the MCD elections. The BJP had mounted unrelenting attacks on Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Sisodia and jailed minister Jain in the run-up to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, the results of which were announced on Wednesday.

AAP candidates record biggest, narrowest victory margins

As the Aam Aadmi Party swept the elections to the 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday, its candidates recorded the biggest and the narrowest victory margins in the polls. AAP's Aaley Mohammed Iqbal won from Chandni Mahal with the biggest margin of 17,134 votes and Ashu Thakur bagged Chittaranjan Park seat by a wafer-thin margin of 44 votes. While Iqbal defeated Congress' Mohd Hamid, Thakur was pitted against BJP's Kanchan Choudhary.

Sultanpuri's Bobi makes history, becomes AAP's first trans councillor in MCD

Sultanpuri's Bobi, who on Wednesday shattered the proverbial glass ceiling to become the AAP's first councillor in Delhi from the transgender community, believes her victory was a celebration of the change in society towards transpersons. Bobi defeated the Congress' Varuna Dhaka by 6,714 votes to win from Sultanpuri-A ward. "Aaj meri khushi ka thikana hai nahin... (My happiness knows no bounds today). This is a celebration of the victory of change and people are becoming more accepting of people like me," she said.

AAP leaders, activists in Chandigarh celebrate party's victory in MCD polls

Celebrations broke out at the AAP's Punjab unit headquarters here on Wednesday following the party's victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. The AAP ended the BJP's 15-year stint in the 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) -- trifurcated in 2012 into north, south and east corporations and unified this year -- by winning 134 seats while restricting the BJP to 104 seats. AAP workers gathered at the party office and distributed sweets.
