In the 2016 Assembly elections, Gangavalli was won by Maruthamuthu A of AIADMK.

Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by R Subha of DMDK.

In the 2016 assembly polls, Maruthamuthu A garnered 74,301 votes, securing over 42.22 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 2,262 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 1.29 percent.

The constituency polled 1,77,128 votes in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly polls with a voter turnout of 80.93 percent.

The Gangavalli constituency has a literacy level of 73.23 percent.
