India Economic Summit: NRC, Citizenship Amendment Bill worries Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma
Oct 3, 2019 1:45 PM

Meghalaya's chief minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said he is worried about National Citizens Register (NRC) exercise in Assam and Citizenship Amendment Bill, which offers citizenships to migrants from neighbouring countries excluding Muslims.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18's Parikshit Luthra, Sangma said, "What the Centre has in mind is going in the overall interest at the national level. However, everything that you do at the national level sometimes has regional impacts. So, I think it is important to carry everybody along."

He further added, "I think the people of North East are concerned by the impact of the demographic situation. There are simple issues like how far will this particular act go, what is the timeline for this, whether there will be issues with the state laws which have been put in place or acts that were prevalent from before to protect the local people, so these concerns are there."
