Women's Reservation Bill: Women MPs of various parties speak in Rajya Sabha — check list
Sep 21, 2023 9:38 PM

Kanimozhi NVN Somu - DMK, Tamil Nadu | “This Bill is called the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’. Stop saluting us. We don’t want to be saluted, we don’t want to be put on pedestals, we do not want to be worshipped. We don’t want to be called mothers, we don’t want to be your wives or sisters. We want to be respected as equals,” Kanimozhi said.

Dola Sen - Trinamool Congress, West Bengal | "Manipur is the only state that has 50 percent women reservation. What is happening in Manipur? What about mothers, daughters of Manipur? When will this 'double-engine' government take responsibility? It has been several months," said Sen while targeting BJP.

Ranjeet Ranjan - Congress, Chhattisgarh | "We don't need your pity... We have never needed your pity, nor will ever need it. It's our compassion, our love that we have allowed ourselves to be the object of your kindness," she said.“Let’s not make a token of worship or respect from men to women, it is linked to a woman's right to be represented in the parliament," she added.

Rajani Ashokrao Patil - Congress, Maharashtra | "We do not want to be goddesses. We don't want to be sisters. We want to be human beings. Do not put us on a pedestal, treat us as equal," said Patil.

Mausam Noor - Trinamool Congress, West Bengal | While challenging the government Noor said, This govt is trying to bring a bill now, which it cannot implement in near future. Mr Prime Minister, if you are serious about this, ensure women's reservation in upcoming assembly and LS elections.

Sulata Deo - Biju Janata Dal, Odisha | "If women are not empowered, the community, the society, the state, or the country cannot progress," Deo said.

Phulo Devi Netam - Congress, Chattisgarh | "Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi have been writing to this government urging it to introduce the bill. It has taken them 9.5 years, but der aaye durust aaye (better late than never)," said Netam.

Amee Yajnik - Congress, Gujarat | "Minister and leaders have been only talking of social welfare schemes and they have mixed up social welfare with political empowerment. This is a journey that started with Rajiv Gandhi," said Yajnik.

Vandana Chavan - NCP, Maharashtra | The NCP MP from Maharashtra questioned the timeline of implementation of the bill and said, "Didn't you do demonetisation overnight? Was a lockdown not imposed with almost immediate effect? Was Art 370 not abrogated one fine morning without notice?"

Jaya Bachchan - Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh | Bachchan took a jibe at BJP and said, "Don't bring bill you don't mean. Don't do it for publicity, you publicise a lot. We are fed up of this."

Nirmala Sitharaman- Union Finance Minister | Sitharaman stated the reason for the delay in implementation and said, "In light of realities before us, it will not be possible to implement this before 2024. Once census is over and delimitation is done, you are going to going to have women's reservation. So, this is not a jumla."

Dr. Kalpana Saini - BJP, Uttarakhand | Saini took a hit at Congress and said, "Efforts have been made to take credit for this bill, but I would like to point out that when they (Congress) were in power, they could not implement such far-sighted changes. It is PM Modi who is doing this."

Priyanka Chaturvedi - Shiv Sena, Maharashtra | Priyanka said, "The government is opening doors for women, but women are also being told they cannot enter for another 7 years."

Kavita Patidar - BJP, MP | "I belong to OBC section. I want to ask why, despite being in power for so long, they have not taken any step for our empowerment? PM Modi has sincerely worked for our welfare," said Patidar.
