In a continued effort to combat the spread of misinformation on the internet, Google has rolled out three innovative tools designed to enhance image understanding and fact-checking. These new features, About this Image, Fact Check Explorer, and AI-generated source descriptions within the Search Generative Experience, aim to empower users to make more informed decisions and combat the proliferation of false information.
About this Image
Google's "About this Image" feature, initially unveiled earlier this year, is now available for global English language users through Google Search. This tool provides users with the means to verify the authenticity and background of images they come across online. "About this Image" offers the following key functions:
Image History: With this tool, users can trace an image's original appearance in Google Search and determine whether it has been previously published on other websites long before. This helps in cases where images are circulated in the context of current events but are, in fact, much older, thus preventing misinformation due to context manipulation.
Usage and Descriptions: The tool offers insights into how an image is used on various web pages, along with opinions and information from other sources, including news outlets and fact-checking websites. This valuable data aids in evaluating claims made about an image and provides diverse viewpoints and evidence.
Image Metadata: Users can access metadata, when available, added by image creators and publishers. This metadata may reveal if the image has undergone AI generation or enhancement and will be present in the original file of all Google AI-generated images.
Fact Check Explorer Adds Image Searching
Fact Check Explorer is a new tool designed for journalists and fact-checkers to gain deeper insights into both images and topics. It employs claim review markup to detect and present fact-check assessments conducted by independent organisations globally.
In a blog post, Google stated, "This summer, we released a global beta version that allows users to upload or input the URL of any image into the Fact Check Explorer to see if it has been featured in any existing fact checks. This version also provides an overview of the different contexts associated with the image and their evolution over time."
Google has also introduced a beta version of the Image Search feature within the FactCheck Claim Search API. This development will soon enable authorised journalists and fact-checkers to access the fact-check image database through the Fact Check Explorer using an API.
This integration will streamline image verification and facilitate the creation of distinct fact-checking products, according to the American tech giant.
Search Generative Experience Offers More Source Information
For users who have opted into the Search Generative Experience (SGE) via Search Labs, there's a new feature that allows them to view AI-generated descriptions of certain sources.
These descriptions are complemented with information about reputable websites discussing the source in question. Google will provide links to these websites within the AI-generated source descriptions.
These AI-generated source descriptions will be accessible in the "more about this page" section of the "About this result" for specific sources, particularly in cases where there is no existing overview available from Wikipedia or the Google Knowledge Graph.
With these new tools, Google continues to invest in efforts to combat misinformation online and empower users with the tools they need to make informed decisions about the information they encounter on the internet.
