Highlighting the growing importance of standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-related products in the future, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh emphasised the necessity for standards in various aspects of AI products to enable benchmarking and aid consumers in making more informed decisions.
He also pointed out that the use of standards as non-tariff measures should not result in them becoming non-tariff barriers.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, speaking at the G20 Standards Dialogue in New Delhi, stressed that standards should prioritise the interests of consumers.
He highlighted the need for regulators worldwide to engage in ongoing dialogue since different countries have their own sets of standards.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the government is addressing issues related to standards in bilateral treaties and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to ensure conformity.
He emphasised that with 70% of global trade occurring through Global Value Chains (GVCs) where components are sourced from various countries, the harmonisation of standards becomes even more essential.
