Support for India | India has been campaigning hard for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Several key countries from advanced and emerging economies, including the US, UK, France, Australia, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa have voiced their support for India's permanent seat at the global high table. Non-permanent members | The UNSC has 10 non-permanent members with no veto powers. According to UN rules, the General Assembly elects five non-permanent members each year. The members have to bag two-thirds majority to qualify for the seat.
India as non-permanent member | India has been elected as non-permanent member of the prestigious body on eight occasions — 1950, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1984, 1991, 2011, and 2020. The tenure of a non-permanent member lasts for two years. (Credit: Reuters)
