Israel's objective is to destroy Hamas, says expert
Oct 12, 2023 12:08 PM

The ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas militants on Thursday entered its sixth day. Till now, violence has claimed approximately 2,500 casualties. Amid the rising tension and speculation of ground invasion by Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Netanyahu has formed an emergency war cabinet alongside opposition leaders, issuing a stern warning that ''every Hamas member is a dead man.''

To understand the ongoing situation, CNBC-TV18 invited a former media advisor to the Israeli government.

Talking about the prevailing situation, Eylon Levy outlined the government's primary goal as not just deterring Hamas but completely dismantling the organisation. He urged the international community to exert pressure on political party cum militant organisation Hamas and demand the immediate and unconditional release of civilian hostages.

On October 7, a surprising and unprecedented attack by Hamas, led to mass scale violence in Israel's southern region. According to Israel's Foreign Ministry, nearly 100 foreigners have been killed, missing or taken hostage in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

Meanwhile, a humanitarian crisis has engulfed Gaza, exacerbated by Israel's refusal to permit the delivery of essential resources, including water, electricity, and fuel, until the release of the hostages held by Hamas.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian government is also asserting its position.

Palestine's Ambassador to India, Adnan Abu Alhaija, highlighted to CNBC-TV18 the importance of global superpowers condemning Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory and pressuring Israel to restore the essential supplies to Gaza. He also suggested that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could play a crucial humanitarian role by urging PM Benjamin Netanyahu to cease oppressive actions against ordinary Gazans.

Simultaneously, India has initiated "Operation Ajay" to evacuate its citizens from the war-hit country, with the first flight scheduled to depart from Tel Aviv tonight.
