S&P/TSX Composite Index up 151 Points Mid-Morning Friday, But With Most Sectors Down

10:42 AM EDT, 08/07/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The S&P/TSX Composite Index is 151 points higher mid-morning Friday but with most sectors in the red.

The outsized decliners are the healthcare and energy sectors, which are down 1.6% and 1.3%, respectively.

Base metals, up 1.6%, is the best performer, followed by the telecommunications sector, which is 0.8% higher.

In economic news, Canada unexpectedly added 75,000 jobs in July. The increase caused the unemployment rate to fall 0.1 percentage points, to 6.4%, the third straight monthly decline and the lowest level since July 2024, Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey revealed on Friday.

In stocks, Jamieson Wellness ( JWLLF ) shares gained 9.6% to C$45.48 after it announced after trade on Thursday that it was being acquired by Japan's Kirin Holdings in a deal valued at C$2.5 billion. The company also reported a second-quarter earnings beat.
