07:37 AM EDT, 10/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Abbott Laboratories ( ABT ) mpox in vitro diagnostic assay has been the first such tool approved by the World Health Organization under its emergency use procedures, the multilateral UN agency said Thursday.

The WHO said Abbot's Alinity m MPXV assay will increase diagnostic capacity in countries facing mpox outbreaks. "Early diagnosis of mpox enables timely treatment and care, and control of the virus," the WHO said.

The assay is a real-time PCR test enabling detection of monkeypox virus DNA from human skin lesion swabs.
