Alphabet Fined $271 Million by France's Competition Regulator
Mar 20, 2024 5:02 AM

07:43 AM EDT, 03/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet (GOOG) and its Google ( GOOG ), Google Ireland, and Google France subsidiaries were fined 250 million euros ($271 million) by France's competition regulator, Autorite de la concurrence, for failure to comply with four of seven commitments made in 2022, the regulator said Wednesday.

The regulator said Google's ( GOOG ) Bard artificial intelligence service, which was launched in France in July 2023, used content from press agencies and publishers without notifying the regulator or the content owners. Publishers and press agencies were unable to negotiate remuneration for the use of their content in Bard, the Autorite added.

Google ( GOOG ) did not contest the decision and agreed to a settlement procedure, said the regulator. The Autorite also said the company proposed corrective measures to address certain breaches.

In response to the fine, Google France said in a blog post that the company agreed to settle "because it's time to move on."

The company said it developed a methodology to guide negotiations in line with the European Union's Copyright Directive. "This reflects how often a news website is displayed and how much ad revenue is generated on pages that also display previews of news content," the company said.
