Alphabet's Google Agrees to Change Privacy Disclosures as Part of Lawsuit Settlement
Apr 1, 2024 9:42 AM

12:17 PM EDT, 04/01/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) has agreed to make changes to its disclosures related to private browsing data to settle a part of a lawsuit that alleged the tech giant collected users data without their knowledge, according to the settlement document Monday.

The case is with the US District Court of the Northern District of California.

If the court approves the settlement, Google ( GOOG ) must delete and/or remediate billions of data records that reflect class members' private browsing activities. This includes data Google ( GOOG ) collected during the class period from private browsing sessions, the document said.

For the next five years, the company would also have to maintain a change to Incognito mode that enables Incognito users to block third-party cookies by default, the document added.

Google ( GOOG ) must discard the private browsing detection bits that plaintiffs uncovered, which the company was sanctioned for concealing. This would result in preventing Google ( GOOG ) from tracking people's choice to browse privately, the document said.

"Google ( GOOG ) supports final approval of the settlement, but disagrees with the legal and factual characterizations contained in the Motion," according to the document.

Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
