Alphabet's Google Drops Cloud Data Transfer Fees in EU Ahead of New Data Law
Sep 10, 2025 4:57 AM

07:32 AM EDT, 09/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOGL, GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) said Wednesday it has eliminated data transfer fees for organizations running workloads across multiple cloud platforms in the European Union and UK, ahead of the EU Data Act taking effect.

The company said the move, part of Google's ( GOOG ) "Data Transfer Essentials" program, exceeds legal requirements by offering transfers at no cost, while the law only mandates that fees be charged at cost.

"Although the Act allows cloud providers to pass through costs to customers, Data Transfer Essentials is available today at no cost to customers," Jeanette Manfra, senior director of global risk and compliance at Google Cloud, said in a blog post.
