07:42 AM EDT, 10/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) said Monday that new Australian regulations barring those under 16 from using social media will be tough to enforce and ultimately ineffective, according to news reports.
Under the new rules, which are set to take effect in December, social media platforms including Google's ( GOOG ) YouTube ( GOOG ) will be required to use artificial intelligence and behavioral data to detect users' ages, Reuters reported.
Google ( GOOG ) and YouTube's ( GOOG ) senior Australia governmental affairs manager Rachel Lord told a parliamentary hearing on Monday that the news rules would not work.
"The legislation will not only be extremely difficult to enforce, it also does not fulfill its promise of making kids safer online," Lord said, according to Euronews. "The solution to keeping kids safer online is not stopping them from being online."
Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
