Alphabet's Mineral Winds Down Operations, Transfers Technologies to Driscoll's
Jul 3, 2024 7:10 AM

09:51 AM EDT, 07/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) agriculture startup Mineral is winding down its operations and has transferred some of its technologies to berry producer Driscoll's, Mineral Chief Executive Elliott Grant said in a blog post Wednesday.

"Mineral will no longer be an Alphabet company, and our technology will live on inside of leading agribusinesses where they can have maximum impact," Grant said.

Driscoll's is the first company to receive Mineral technology, which will be integrated into Driscoll's systems to help the berry company achieve its sustainability goals, according to Grant.

Mineral, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to help agribusinesses and farmers improve their bottom line, had worked with Driscoll's to develop AI tools to improve crop phenotyping, better forecast yields, optimize quality inspections and cut food waste, Grant said.

Mineral has struggled to identify a sound business model in a competitive industry with low profit margins, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing four people with knowledge of the matter.

Alphabet and Driscoll's didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
