Alphabet's Waymo Gets Permit to Test Autonomous Vehicles in New York City

12:11 PM EDT, 08/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo received approval from the New York City Department of Transportation to begin testing autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, the department said Friday.

Under the program, Waymo will be allowed to test up to eight autonomous vehicles until late September, with a trained specialist behind the wheel at all times, according to the agency, which also said Waymo can apply for a permit extension to extend the pilot testing phase.

The permit covers testing only and does not include for-hire services, the deparment said.

Shares were up over 2% in recent trading.
