05:42 AM EDT, 07/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) YouTube ( GOOG ) will be included in Australia's upcoming social media ban for children under 16 years, starting in December, multiple news outlets reported Wednesday, citing statements from the company and Australian officials.
The ban will reportedly also cover TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Snapchat, and will prevent teenagers from creating accounts while still allowing them to view YouTube ( GOOG ) videos.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was quoted by the news outlets as saying the move aims to reduce social harm to children, while eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant cited YouTube ( GOOG ) as the most reported platform for harmful content among 10- to 15-year-olds.
YouTube ( GOOG ), owned by Google ( GOOG ), reportedly said it will consider its next steps and continue engaging with the government after previously arguing it should be excluded from the ban.
Under the law, tech companies face fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($32.5 million) if they fail to deactivate existing accounts or block new ones for minors, the news outlets reported.
Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
