Amazon, Alphabet-backed Anthropic to Pay $1.5 Billion Settlement in Copyright Lawsuit
Sep 8, 2025 5:12 AM

07:40 AM EDT, 09/08/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) and Alphabet (GOOG)-backed Anthropic has agreed to pay at least $1.5 billion to resolve a copyright lawsuit from a group of authors who accused the artificial intelligence company of using their books without consent to train its AI assistant Claude, according to a court filing Friday.

Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson filed the class action against Anthropic last year and have asked US District Judge William Alsup to approve the settlement in Friday's filing.

The $1.5 billion settlement fund amounts to $3,000 for 500,000 downloaded books, and it could increase if more pirated works are found.

As part of the settlement, Anthropic will destroy the downloaded copies of books that the authors accused it of pirating.
