01:04 PM EST, 12/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon ( AMZN ) on Monday dismissed a US Senate committee report that accused the company of prioritizing productivity over the safety of its warehouse workers by ignoring recommendations for improvements.
The report, prepared by the Democratic majority staff of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, outlined findings from an investigation into Amazon's ( AMZN ) workplace safety practices that was initiated by Committee Chairman Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont., in mid-2023.
The report alleged that Amazon ( AMZN ) expected workers to "move at unsafe rates and in unsafe conditions" to meet productivity demands, resulting in systemic safety failures and high rates of injury.
It also alleged that Amazon ( AMZN ) was aware of the safety risks caused by the speed it demands of workers and did not act on the findings of internal studies that recommended reducing workers' pace to prevent injuries.
Amazon ( AMZN ) called the findings misleading.
In a blog post, the company said Sanders had issued "another report that's wrong on the facts and features selective, outdated information that lacks context and isn't grounded in reality."
The company went on to say that despite increasing its delivery speed over the past five years, it had seen injury rates go down, and highlighted a 23% reduction in recordable incident rate in the US and adherence to strong policies for workplace safety.
Amazon ( AMZN ) shares were up 1.7% in recent Monday trading.
