01:49 PM EDT, 04/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) faces a lawsuit by GMB Union in the UK alleging the company pressured workers to cancel membership in the labor group.
Amazon ( AMZN ) placed QR codes at its fulfillment centers to generate an email to workers requesting that membership is cancelled. and displayed anti-union messages through the workplace, the union alleged Friday.
"Amazon ( AMZN ) is a multi-billion-pound corporation, doing everything in its power to stop minimum wage workers from forming a union," Amanda Gearing, GMB senior organizer, said in a statement. "Their latest American-style anti-union campaign proves they will stop at nothing to beat the rules that every other employer in the UK is expected to follow."
The company provided QR codes for those employees who wished to cancel their membership, an Amazon ( AMZN ) spokesperson said in a statement to MT Newswires.
"Our employees told us how difficult it was to cancel their union membership so we provided information to help, through signs that always state that it's an employee's personal choice," the spokesperson said.
The company hasn't received notification of legal action and believes there's no merit in such a case, the spokesperson said.
Amazon ( AMZN ) shares rose 3.6% in recent trading Friday.
