03:07 PM EDT, 06/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Members of the Amazon Labor Union have voted to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in a bid to help pressure the Amazon.com ( AMZN ) during labor contract negotiations, the unions said Tuesday.
The vote passed with roughly 98% of ALU members in favor of chartering the ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1, which will represent the approximately 5,500 Amazon ( AMZN ) warehouse workers at the JFK8 facility on Staten Island, New York, and have jurisdiction over the company's warehouse workers in New York's five boroughs, according to the statement.
The Amazon Labor Union agreed to join the Teamsters earlier this month, pending the vote by its members.
"Workers at Amazon ( AMZN ) -- in the warehouses or behind the wheel -- have proven they have the strength, unity, and determination to take on the greediest employer on the planet, and win," Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien said in a statement. "Together, with hard work, courage, and conviction, the Teamsters and ALU will fight fearlessly to ensure Amazon ( AMZN ) workers secure the good jobs and safe working conditions they deserve in a union contract."
"Having the support of 1.3 million Teamsters to take on Amazon ( AMZN ) gives us tremendous worker power and the opportunities to demand better conditions for our members and, most importantly, to secure a contract at JFK8," Amazon Labor Union President Chris Smalls said.
Amazon ( AMZN ) didn't respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
The ALU won its election at the Staten Island warehouse in 2022, but it has yet to secure a labor contract with the company.
"Workers at JFK8 were united, prevailing against an intense union-busting campaign by Amazon ( AMZN ) that included the company flooding its warehouses with managers pressuring workers to vote no, threatening workers for overseeing ballot boxes, and repeatedly calling the police when workers were being informed of their rights," the unions said Tuesday.
