Digital giants Amazon, Flipkart and Ola are betting on lightweight versions of their mobile apps similar to Facebook Lite, to overcome patchy mobile internet connectivity, The Economic Times reported.
Taxi-hailing major Ola told ET that the deployment of Ola Lite, weighing only 1MB, has helped the company reach out to the users in tier 2 and tier 3 towns.
Whereas, Amazon India pointed out that more than 65 percent of its orders come from tier 2 and below geographies, giving them the incentive to launch its 2 MB lightweight mobile app Micron, added the report.
Amar Nagaram, vice president (consumer shopping experience) at Flipkart, told that paper that “it has fast and easy navigation and works on 2G and in the offline mode too” and the version has helped in solving technology problems in areas with weak network coverage.
