Amazon Ordered by CPSC to Issue Recall, Refunds for Hazardous Products
Jan 17, 2025 11:20 AM

01:57 PM EST, 01/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) was issued a final order by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to take action regarding certain hazardous products sold on its platform, according to a Friday statement from the agency.

The CPSC determined in July that Amazon ( AMZN ) was deemed a distributor of defective products that failed to meet federal safety standards. This includes products sold by third-party sellers using Amazon's ( AMZN ) Fulfilled by Amazon ( AMZN ) program. The agency said over 400,000 products are subject to the order, including defective carbon monoxide detectors and clothing for children that infringed on federal flammability standards.

As part of the agency's order, Amazon ( AMZN ) must notify the public about the hazardous products by posting recall notices on its website and directly informing purchasers through email and updates on their "Your Orders" page. The online retailer must also notify third-party sellers involved in the distribution of these products. Amazon ( AMZN ) will have to offer a full refund to customers who provide proof of destruction or disposal of the affected products. The company must also maintain records of the recalls for five years and submit monthly progress reports on its actions for the same period, the CPSC said.

The decision will take effect on Jan. 26, the agency added.

Amazon.com ( AMZN ) didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
