08:37 AM EDT, 07/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) Amazon Web Services unit will move Australia's top secret intelligence data to the cloud under a deal with the Australian government worth 2 billion Australian dollars ($1.35 billion), the country's defense ministry said Thursday.
AWS will establish a sovereign top secret cloud that will allow the defense ministry and the 10 National Intelligence Community agencies to share the most sensitive information and other intelligence data, the ministry said.
The top secret cloud will "enable the seamless sharing of classified data between Australia's National Intelligence Community and the Australian Defense Force," according to AWS. The company added that it will also create new artificial intelligence capabilities for the cloud.
Defense Minister Richard Marles said in a statement that the partnership between AWS and the Australian Signals Directorate would improve the military's warfighting capacity and "strengthen interoperability with key international partners."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement the deal would improve national security capabilities as well as create 2,000 local jobs.
