02:28 PM EDT, 05/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) announced on Tuesday that Amazon Web Services lead sales executive Matt Garman will become the cloud computing business' new chief executive as Adam Selipsky steps down.
Garman, who started at Amazon ( AMZN ) as a Masters of Business Administration intern in 2005 and has been a full-time employee since 2006, will officially take the reins from Selipsky on June 3.
Selipsky was rehired at Amazon ( AMZN ) in 2021 as AWS's CEO after departing in 2016 to become CEO of business intelligence platform Tableau.
Amazon ( AMZN ) CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement that he met with Selipsky several times to regarding the possibility of coming back to lead AWS. "In those conversations, we agreed that if he accepted the role, he'd likely do it for a few years, and that one of the things he'd focus on during that time was helping prepare the next generation of leadership," according to Jassy.
"We had strong leaders in AWS, several of whom could lead the overall business in the long-term, but who'd benefit from a few more years gaining experience and learning under a more seasoned CEO," Jassy said in Tuesday's statement.
AWS reached a $100 billion annual revenue run rate this past quarter, with year-over-year revenue reaccelerating, according to Jassy. Amazon ( AMZN ) last month surpassed first-quarter top- and bottom-line expectations, with AWS revenue climbing 17% year over year to $25.04 billion. Selipsky is leaving AWS in "a strong position," Jassy said.
In 2016, Garman became the general manager of all AWS Compute services before moving to the demand generation side of AWS in 2020 to lead sales, marketing, support, and professional services.
"There will naturally be some organizational adjustments" as the cloud computing platform seeks to move faster and invent more, Garman said.
