Amazon's AWS, Orbital Materials Team Up on AI-Created Decarbonization Technologies
Dec 2, 2024 7:10 AM

09:57 AM EST, 12/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) Amazon Web Services and artificial intelligence startup Orbital Materials said Monday they have signed a multi-year collaboration to use AI to create advanced materials for carbon removal, chip cooling, and water usage to support data center efficiency.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The companies said that Orbital will leverage its proprietary AI tools for materials development, while AWS will provide cloud and hardware infrastructure to support these efforts.

AWS will begin testing Orbital's new carbon-capturing material at one of its data centers in 2025, Reuters quoted Orbital Materials Chief Executive Jonathan Godwin as saying.

Orbital's open-source AI model for advanced materials, named Orb, will also be available through AWS platforms, allowing customers to use it for research into advanced materials for semiconductors, batteries, and electronics, according to the companies' joint statement.

AWS will provide infrastructure support, including its SageMaker service and Trainium chip, to advance Orbital's development efforts, the companies added.
